On 26th June 2015, students from BQS Semester 1 visited The Andes Construction Site to find out more about how real life construction looks like and to learn more about the process of construction.
The Site:
This construction site is located
in Bandar Kinrara, Bukit Jalil, and 30 minutes from Taylor’s University
Lakeside campus. The development comprises 2 blocks of mid-cost condominium
which totals up to 353 units and 22 units of 3-storey villa.
The commencement date of this
project is on 5th May 2014, with a total contract sum of RM
21,500,00o. Currently, the scope of works in progress is the substructures.
Site Plan:
The site is separated into 2 parts: The villas and the condo. In this site visit, we focused on the substructures of the condo.

Reflection:
Through this site visit, I learnt a lot especially regarding
the differences of the practical works and what we learn in class. This is also
the first time I get to see a real pilecap (and a huge one indeed) and the
internal structures that I only got to see on papers. Witnessing the real thing
gave me a clearer image of the structure and makes it easier for me to imagine
the structure while doing taking off.
I also found out about the foundation system – Floor slab on
pile cap. This idea is relatively new to me as I always thought that pile caps
must come with column stumps. I also saw the various stages of casting concrete
and building of formworks.
This is also the first time I get to inspect the machineries
close up. I have never seen a sheet pile vibrator until now. I also saw how the
sheet piles interlock and how it is used to facilitate substructure works.
In a nutshell, I think this site visit really helped me in understanding
the construction process as a whole. I am now even more interested in knowing
the part and parcels of the construction industry.
