In this module I learnt about the accurate ways of measuring the quantities of substructures and also the frame of the building, starting all the way from excavating the topsoil until the roof beams. Also, I learnt about the basic principles of measurement, including the format of billing paper, how to refer to the Standard Method of Measurement 2 (SMM2), and also the steps of taking off.
Besides that, we learnt about the rules of writing different types of descriptions of items from different trades. I realise the importance of adhering to the SMM2 and writing the accurate descriptions to avoid misunderstandings while tendering and carrying out the works. I came to the knowledge that the SMM2 is used throughout the whole Malaysia.
I also realised that being a Quantity Surveyor isn't all that simple and boring. A Quantity Surveyor has to analyse the given conditions and produce the best Bill of Quantities that best suit the current circumstances; He or she needs to have a complete knowledge of the construction process. This means that every project is totally different from one another, may it be the type of engineering drawings, of the design specification that the Quantity Surveyor has to take into account. I find these things interesting and challenging, as I need to understand the basic things I learnt in class and apply it too various conditions.
All in all, I find this module very interesting and I hope I will be able to apply what I learnt in my future undertakings.
