In this module we learnt how to operate two quantity surveying softwares, namely Exactal CostX and Buildsoft Global Estimating.
CostX is mainly used for taking off from drawings (PDF, JPEG, or DWG files) and linking the quantities to the built-in workbooks, otherwise known as BoQ. We have never done such an easy and quick taking off, especially when we do not need to deal with humungous A1 sized papers and the pesky scale rules while squinting our eyes to read the overly-fine fine prints. These screenshots below are several examples of how we extracted quantities from the drawings.
Taking off floor finishes quantities from DWG files. |
Taking off can also be done on a JPEG drawing once the scale is set. |
More amazingly, the takeoff area (in this case a wall finish) can be projected into 3D for easy checking. |
Rebar quantities can also be taken off with the Rebar measuring mode in the software. |
Finally, the measured quantities can be linked to the workbook, minimizing the errors. |
Next, we used Buildsoft Global Estimating to prepare the Bill of Quantities and prepare the price list to price the Bills. It is quite a plain and straightforward software, which in turn makes it very easy to use. This sample BQ shown below is the end product of this software.
All in all, I would like to thank all my group members for the smooth sailing or our assignment and also helping each other out when we were stuck in the softwares. Last but not least I would like to thank Ms Lim for the guidance and advice she gave us throughout the whole semester.
Regards,
Pang Khai Shuen
