As one of the most challenging modules of this semester, Structures is a simplified module on Structural Engineering. Throughout the semester we focused on the resolution of forces, and we worked on several typed of structures such as trusses and beams.

This figure above shows a Warren truss, characterized by its fully diagonal vertical members. All the external and internal forces acting on this structural can be calculated using either the Graphical Method, Method of Joints, or Method of Sections, based on 3 equations only as the structures is assumed to be at equilibrium:

∑Fy = 0
∑Fx = 0
 ∑M = 0

Next we also learnt about shear force and bending moment diagrams. This is used to calculate the various forced acting on a beam. This figure below shows a sample Shear Force Diagram (SFD) and Bending Moment Diagram (BMD) of a beam.

As we can see, the various loading patterns on the beam affects the shear force and bending moments thoughout the beam itself.

All in all, this is a very interesting module for me, and I would like to thank our lecturer Mr Chai for providing the most comprehensive guidance and helping us tackle the problems we faced while solving the given questions.

Regards,
Pang Khai Shuen
